Figuring out job interview question and answer strategies can be a nerve wrecking experience particularly for first timers or those that are in desperate need of a job. They would prepare endlessly for days, study self help books about ‘How to face an interview’, memorize answers to ‘expected’ questions etc. This article looks at the psychology of interviewers, job interview question and answer strategies, and what most people do wrong while faced with an interview.

Most people think that attending interviews means answering tough questions. Hence they try to prepare answers to as many questions as possible by reading books related to facing interviews. But it would be humanly impossible to remember all the answers and recall them at the right time. It should be borne in mind that by inviting you to an interview, the employer has already short listed you based on your resume that you are suitable for the job. Otherwise you would not have been called for the interview in the first place. Hence the purpose of the interview is mainly to ascertain three things – that the contents of the resume are true and that you are capable of doing the job, that you would be with the company as long as needed and that you would form a good chemistry with other employees of the company.

Keeping the above points in mind, the questions in the interview are likely to be oriented towards revealing the real you as most people write only good things about them in their resumes – as no one likes to admit that he or she was a failure. Most of the competing candidates would have more or less same qualifications; otherwise they would not have been called for interview and you have to stand out among the crowd by giving intuitive answers in the interview. While others might be busy rehearsing the generic questions, it might actually make it easy for you if you remember the main purpose of the interview as given above.

If you are asked the typical question, where would you see yourself in X years time, a proper response would be that you would want to be in the same position as the interviewer is, both starting at the same time. This type of answer would prompt the interviewer to ask more questions seeking clarifications. It would also send a positive signal that you are serious about the job and that you would stick around with the company. Giving intuitive answers would make you stand out among the crowd and compel the interviewer to hire you. Other points to remember when attending interviews are: questions are expected from you also, show your eagerness to know about the company’s business and lastly clear any suspicions of the employer that he or she might have about your capabilities.

It is not a requirement to learn by heart expected questions and answers by guessing what the interviewer might ask. You just have to remain calm and allay any reservations that the interviewer may have about your capability and the job is yours.

There is a huge list of tips which might be useful while preparing a resume. It is so large that a book can be made on tips to be kept in mind while writing a resume. A proper resume would help an individual smoothly sail through the job application level to the process of interview.

However, it is considered better to stress on a few important points while preparing a resume rather than paying attention to too many details which may make the resume look too cluttered.

Given below are the main points to be considered while writing up a resume in one of the best ways possible:

1. The foremost decision to be made is regarding the size of the resume as in, it is concerned with deciding what all should be disclosed in the resume. We have to make a decision as to whether the resume should just be a qualification brief or if it should be a full length one. Once this is decided, the applicant can focus on the necessary details.

2. Once the decision relating the type of resume to be prepared is decided, the next step to be taken is concerned with collecting the necessary information. Though it might seem like a very easy and simple task to do, it involves a lot of hard work. This is because you need to gather all the necessary documents and certificates and organize them in a neat and orderly manner. You cannot rely blindly on your memory for putting all the information on paper; so, make sure you refer to the necessary certificates and documents for confirming the information provided.

3. Any book giving tips on writing up a resume would have definitely mentioned the points discussed above. It is necessary to focus on the expectations of the company rather than showing the company supervisor or the personnel manager how good your background is. The best way to prepare a successful resume is by blending in your educational qualifications and personal experience with what the company expects and needs from you. The company’s needs and expectations might be stated clearly in some cases while in many cases the applicant needs to do some amount of research and find out what the company exactly calls for.

4. Last but not the least; make sure you do not start your resume as if you have got no work experience. Every individual has some quality bestowed in him which may come out under specific conditions. Hence, it is important that you draw enough attention to the skills and talents that you have got within you.

It will lower your stress and help you feel in control of the situation.

And less stress, in turn, will make your job interviews much more successful.

But how should you prepare? Take this 5-question quiz to find out how you’re doing — and how you could be doing much better.

1. Have you researched the company?

Do you know their mission and vision statements? Have you been to their website and made a thorough analysis of their products and services? Do you have a general idea of their strategic growth plan, their policies and projects? Get as much information about the company as you possibly can from any and all sources available to you.

2. Have you prepared answers to typical job interview questions?

There are volumes and volumes of great information about job interviews on the web. Most of it is free. Take advantage of these wonderful resources! Simply go to your favorite search engine – Google, Yahoo, MSN – and type in something like “job interview tips”, “professional job interviews,” “executive interview tips” or “job interview sample questions.” Then download some of the sample questions you’ll find. Take time to prepare and practice powerful answers. Then test yourself. There are even websites that give you multiple choice quizzes on the best job interview answers! Use them.

3. Have you found out who will be on the selection panel?

This is where you can really jump ahead of the competition. All you have to do is ask for the names and position titles of the people interviewing you in advance of the job interview. Then find out as much as you can about each of them. It will help you connect more effectively with your interviewers and ask more intelligent questions.

4. Did you ask how to prepare for the job interview?

Here’s another step that your competition will likely never think to do. When you receive the call inviting you for a job interview, get all the necessary details such as time and place, as well as names of individuals on the selection committee and then … wow them by asking their advice on how to prepare for the job interview. Then listen, and use the information you get.

5. Did you think through how you can solve problems for their company?

People are hired to solve problems. The more problems you can solve, the greater your perceived value to your target employer. List your top problem-solving skills and think of some of the biggest problems you have solved in your career.

How did you do? 5 out of 5? 1 or 2 out of 5? More important than how well you did in this quiz is how well you do in your future job interviews. Use these valuable tips to prepare and you will not only feel better at your next job interviews, but do better too.
