Clearly identifying your strengths in relation to the position you are interviewing for is an exercise that every job applicant should undertake. In addition to it helping you answer the question of ‘What are your strengths?’, it will help you evaluate whether this job will provide the right opportunity to capitalize on your strengths.

A strength is a combination of inherent talent and personal characteristics, behavior, transferable skills and learned knowledge that when applied produces a consistently successful result. Consider these key questions when evaluating what your strengths are.

What are the activities and tasks that I feel involved and truly engaged with when I perform them? When I am busy with these activities do I become immersed and concentrate completely or I am distracted and disinterested?

What is my initial and automatic response to the activity? Do I feel happy about undertaking the task and does it provide me with a feeling of satisfaction?

Which activities consistently produce the right results? What work and activities are performed well and successfully? Do I feel good when performing the activity?

What activities have I been able to learn rapidly and understand quickly? When have I welcomed and enjoyed the challenge of learning something new?

Make a list of these activities using verbs to describe your strengths such as scheduling, teaching, developing, delegating, evaluating and analyzing.

Once you have listed what are your strengths you need to understand how they translate on a work-related level and in particular what they mean on a practical level for this specific job. Put yourself inside the employer\’s head and consider your strengths from this perspective. Review the job activities and tasks and consider how your strengths will add value to these.

Jobs in medical sales, laboratory sales, biotechnology sales, clinical diagnostics sales, medical device sales, imaging sales, hospital equipment sales, pathology sales, and other healthcare sales are fairly competitive to get into (you’re going to have to put some effort into it), but worth it in terms of compensation, commissions, and extras.  Plus, it’s an exciting place to be if you have an interest in science or medicine (but not blood), technology, business, and helping people.

You’re going to have to go the extra mile (especially in this economy!) to land a position in healthcare sales, but there are several great ways to set yourself apart from the competition.  Doing all of them will definitely make you a standout candidate!  Here’s how to prepare for a sales job interview: 

1.  Research the company.  There is no substitute for doing your homework.  Know what the company does, what its current issues are, and what the future plans include.  Your job is to find out what you can do for them.  Your research gives you material to talk about during the interview and a way to custom-fit your answers to their specific questions. 

2.  Build a brag book.  Click the link for the video and more explanation, but basically it’s a collection of awards, sales rankings, successful projects, letters from happy customers or managers, and so on.  When you present it during the interview, it showcases your presentation skills as well as your accomplishments. 

3.  Create a 30/60/90-day plan.  This kind of plan is a written demonstration of what you will do for the company in your first 3 months on the job–how you will get your training, how you will transition into being a contributing member of the sales team, and so on.  If you need more help, you can download samples and a template with audio coaching from the Sales Recruiter.  This kind of plan will definitely get the attention of the hiring manager.

4.  Read my Tips on How to Ace Your Medical Sales Interview.   Also, look up typical Sales Interview Questions to be prepared.  Think of your interview as a sales call, and act accordingly.

Here\’s the best news: I can teach you to transform any old mundane, lackluster, half-hearted answer that you might come up with, into that amazing answer. Identify the Type of Question

It may seem that there are an infinite variety of questions in interviews. In reality, there are only 6 types of questions that routinely occur in interviewers. And, all 6 usually occur in each and every interview.

In fact, I would hazard a guess that if you encounter an interview without all 6 types of questions, you are dealing with a very inexperienced interviewer. That\’s actually to your advantage, since you are rapidly becoming VERY skilled at interviewing.

The 6 major types of questions are:

1. Personality questions
2. Strength questions
3. Weakness questions
4. Motivation questions
5. Education and Experience Questions
6. Work Habits questions

By the way, the questions are listed in this order, because that is the order in which they are most commonly asked. Work Habits questions may occur at any point during the interview, but the other types of questions occur in a fairly predictable order. In the sample questions, we\’ll discuss each type of question in detail. If you can effectively answer those 6 types of questions, you can ace any interview.
